Still Sweet Lofty Burrow
On his newest EP Lofty Burrow, Still Sweet's Darian Scatton unfolds a series of delicate pop songs whose undeniable sweetness is tempered by shades of melancholy. Scatton is a classically trained pedal harpist and multi-instrumentalist who also plays synths in the atmospheric electronic duo Hallowed Bells, and here his dual talents for intricate harp compositions and dreamy electronic textures are accented by more rustic sounds including organ, clarinet and saw. On each side of the record, two tracks blend into one another to create a continuous journey through seasons of isolation and restlessness, hope and desperation. Throughout, the lyrics work in tandem with the tone and arrangements to double the emotional impact of the songs, from the numbing loneliness reflected in the catatonic yet lovely trudge of the droney "Frosty Panes" to the naive hope embodied by the buoyantly skipping waltz of the harp-driven "Nipping at Your Feet."
Lofty Burrow is available as a 45 RPM 12" (limited to 220 copies) and digital download with original watercolor artwork by Darian.
